John Clamme to Teach Innovative Course on STEAM and Sports at University of San Francisco Next Semester

ATLANTA (Dec. 8, 2016) -- John Clamme, general manager of STEAM Sports Group’s San Francisco office, will introduce in January the first sports management course at the University of San Francisco that highlights the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) behind sports.

Clamme, an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco, periodically teaches sports management and marketing classes.  As he was compiling his syllabus, he asked himself: “How do I make this course different from so many of the other sports marketing and management courses that are being offered out there?”

His answer was to create a curriculum, accepted by USF, that didn’t study the standard promotions and marketing activations undertaken by many of the Bay Area’s major league teams – the 49ers, Raiders, Warriors, Giants, A’s, Earthquake and Sharks – but to craft a look at the innovations and concentrations that are changing the sports marketplace.

Among those was STEAM.

“The course will be designed to open students’ minds to initiatives, opportunities and partnerships outside of the traditional sports landscape,” says Clamme.  “It will peek at some of the ‘outliers’ in the world of business development, challenging students to think creatively to devise new and innovative ways to partner.”

STEAM Sports Group, for instance, has partnered with Honda Performance Development, DeltaWing Technology Group, and leading U.S. universities on programs designed to unite business, education and sports.  The Honda STEAM Connections Tour at San Jose State University in September showcased Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, Verizon IndyCar Series team co-owner Bryan Herta and HPD engineer Luiz Oliveras for a daylong program in which they collaborated with SJSU’s Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering’s Formula SAE programs to demonstrate the science, technology, engineering, arts and math behind motorsports.  

In addition to STEAM partnerships, Clamme’s course will examine unique activations around new technology, new media, fine arts, sustainability, live entertainment, and Fortune 500 companies.
