ATLANTA, GA (March 26) - Cara Adams is lead engineer for Firestone’s Race Tire Engineering Team. While a female in her position is still a rarity, the ascent has made sense. She always loved science and came by it honestly. Her mom was a science teacher and her grandfather worked for NASA.She is a fixture on the NTT IndyCar® circuit and admits to getting hooked on the science and engineering of racing after attending the Grand Prix of Cleveland while still an undergraduate at the University of Akron. “I began pursuing this path because I loved the technologies of racing,” said Adams, who learned how to build open-wheel race cars at Akron as a member of the Formula SAE design team. While more females are becoming interested in motorsports engineering, Adams admits it was a bit challenging early on.“Early in my career it would have been nice to see more of that diversity within motorsport engineering, but the support system has been growing. Part of that growth is due to the interest in STEM/STEAM, which is why I make it a priority to mentor girls at an early age about the amazing opportunities science can bring. I am glad to be able to share stories about many successful women in IndyCar racing, the motorsports industry, and automotive engineering in general.”
Today, Adams proudly oversees all design, development and track-side support of Firestone race tires while managing a talented group of engineers that specifically design and extensively test each tire specification for the surface and conditions at each race.
