ATLANTA (Aug. 7, 2017) – Cara Adams, chief engineer for Bridgestone Americas Motorsports, has joined the roster of presenters for the Honda STEAM Connections Tour program Sept. 13 at the University of California-Berkeley.
The tour of college campuses showcases the science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) behind Honda’s Verizon IndyCar Series program to area middle school and high school students, with an emphasis on career opportunities in motorsports and the automotive industry. Adams previously was the senior project engineer, race tire development, and joined the Nashville-based company in 2003.
At the University of Akron, where she received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Adams was a member of the Formula SAE Design Team. With a keen interest in science since youth – her mother was a science teacher and her grandfather an engineer at NASA – Adams regularly speaks to students about the importance of STEAM courses. She’s especially passionate about females seeking STEAM-related career paths.
Women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29 percent of the science and engineering workforce, according to the National Science Foundation. At UC-Berkeley, Adams will conduct brief seminars about tire technology and the vital role of analytics in the high-speed and demanding racing environment. She will also participate in a Q&A session with students. The Honda STEAM Connections Tour event also will feature the Honda-powered No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing car of driver Max Chilton, who will participate in a Q&A with students along with a Honda Performance Development trackside engineer. Cal-Berkeley’s Formula SAE team members will host the event and display their car builds and other projects relating to engineering programs. The Honda STEAM Connections Tour event at Cal-Berkeley precedes the Verizon IndyCar Series championship-deciding race Sept. 15-17 at Sonoma Raceway. The tour is organized and managed by STEAM Sports Group. For more information Dave Lewandowski (STEAM Sports Group), david@dickinsonpg.com, 317-331-9385
