STEAM Sports Foundation Supports National Hispanic Month - Highlights Scholarship Recipients

In honor and in full support of National Hispanic Month, STEAM Sports Foundation salutes its Hispanic scholarship winners Jinelee Galindez (’22) and Tanya Andres (’23).

The foundation focuses on scholarships and career summits in an effort to help create tomorrow’s vibrant workforce. Its “Women of Color” scholarship program in automotive/motorsports engineering provides diversity to a transportation industry that is ever-changing via innovation and technology with individuals who traditionally did not consider these career paths simply because they saw few who looked like them in the industry.

Jinelee Galindez is a true success story. At the age of 40 during the pandemic’s economic shutdown, she had lost most everything – except her hope and determination. A transition was in order. Essential. Unable to get to potential job interviews in the service industry because her car did not work, she went online to find out how to fix her car.

A short time after that, she walked into Universal Technical Institute’s Orlando campus and expressed interest in learning more. Today, armed with a degree from both UTI and Mercedes Benz DRIVE program, she is a certified lube technician at Orlando’s Mercedes Benz dealership, while also working a roadside service position. She was recent winner of TechForce Foundation’s “Techs Rock Rookie of the Year” award. Jinelee earned her $5,000 scholarship from STEAM Sports Foundation in 2022.

Tanya Andres started studying psychology, computer science, and criminology. She soon learned none of those were her passion. Strangely enough, it was a flat tire repair that got her interested in the automotive industry. That lead her to the automotive program at Universal Technical Institute’s Lisle (IL) campus from where she expects to graduate in February.

In April, she begins manufacture-specific advanced training with Volvo at its Ridgeville, SC operation. In the meantime, she’s working part-time as a porter at a local Volvo dealership. Tanya received her scholarship from STEAM Sports Foundation in 2023.
