One “added extra attraction” of becoming a recipient of a STEAM Sports Foundation scholarship is the “Immersion Tour.” Last fall, SSF brought four of its scholarship winners to Charlotte Motor Speedway for a weekend immersion into motorsports. The tour included tours complete with Q&As at the General Motors Technical and Research Center, Hendrick Motor Sports and Trackhouse Racing.
Two-time recipient Ashley Jones of Wayne State University shares a few thoughts about the Immersion Tour.
With this unforgettable opportunity, I have experienced more within the world of motorsports than many fans may ever experience in their lifetimes, and I owe it to STEAM Sports Foundation.
I was able to see and be a part of a different work culture than what I was used to. At the Tech Center, Tai Robinson brought valuable insights, shedding light on the existing lack of diversity in motorsports and emphasizing the crucial need to raise awareness among minority individuals about opportunities in motorsports.
Alba Colon’s (Hendrick) work and achievements are nothing short of impressive. Her professional journey shows the dedication and perseverance that paved the way to her current success. I found her story incredibly inspiring and look up to her as a beacon of excellence in our shared field of mechanical engineering.
The Trackhouse guys went beyond just encouraging us to ask questions. They took the initiative to vividly illustrate the critical importance of teamwork, showing how it directly affects the dynamic world of racing.
I learned that I didn’t know how much engineering goes into one race car, how much information is being pulled during each race, and how fast pace everything is.
I believe a scholarship recipient should attend the SSF Motorsports Immersion Tour because it is a once in a lifetime learning experience. The Immersion Tour gave me the chance to meet knowledgeable and insightful individuals, explore potential career paths, experience diverse environments, and connect with people I may never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.
